Theatre and Live Art,
Intimacy Coordination

Burcu Emeç is a theatre / live art artist, intimacy coordinator (film/tv), and intimacy director (live performance) based in Tkarón:to / “Toronto” and working seamlessly across stage and screen.

Burcu’s theatre and live art practice employs participatory performance and objects, playing with the lines between “performativity” and “non-acting.” She frequently weaves social commentary and images as expanded notions of narrative, with a particular emphasis on spatial and visual dramaturgy. Burcu’s work has found its place in venues ranging from theatres and galleries to public spaces and and parks, speaking to her interdisciplinary nature. She has received support from top performance companies and festivals in Canada like the FTA (Festival TransAmériques), La SERRE-arts vivants, MAI (Montréal, arts interculturels), SummerWorks, Playwrights Workshop Montreal, and Public Recordings. Her practice is informed by her socioeconomic position as a middle class queer woman of Kurdish origin.

Throughout her artistic journey, Burcu has been interested in the way artists collaborate and how it impacts their work. This interest led her to work at Articule, one of Canada’s oldest artist-run centres, where she played a pivotal role in facilitating anti-harassment and anti-racist advocacy initiatives.

This advocacy thread continues in Burcu's role as an intimacy professional (stage and screen), guiding productions and performers with a consent and movement based framework to safely handle nudity, intimacy, or sensitive subject matter. Holding certifications from two SAG-AFTRA accredited programs, IDC: Intimacy Directors and Coordinators (U.S.) and Intimacy Coordinators Canada, Burcu has worked with major studios like A24, Amazon, Netflix, CBS, and Lionsgate/Starz. She trained with leading professionals like HBO’s In-House Intimacy Coordinator Alicia Rodis (The Deuce, Insecure, High Maintenance), and Claire Warden, the first intimacy director on Broadway. Burcu brings over 15 years of storytelling experience on stage and screen and a robust background in movement and mental health to support actors and directors alike. She holds a complimentary certification as an active listener, which enriches her skills in on-site mental health support. Burcu addresses her work in a queer, anti-racist, and sex-positive framework, aiming to foster an empowering environment for every member of the team.
